There is no public buyer-journey study for pultrusion equipment. The most useful framework comes from a law firm that handles China equipment disputes: Harris Sliwoski's seven questions to answer before paying for expensive equipment from China (Harris Sliwoski, Aug 2026). This guide applies those seven questions to a pultrusion machine, its dies and the auxiliary equipment that makes up a line.
It is written for a plant manager or owner who will audit the supplier. Each section ends in something you can get in writing. The checklist table near the end collects them on one page.
1. Who is the legal entity?
Identify the company that signs the contract and whether it is the manufacturer or an intermediary (Harris Sliwoski, Aug 2026). Both models are legitimate. What matters is that you know who builds the machine, who exports it and who is obliged to support parts, software and warranty.
Check the business license. Its registered business scope shows whether a company manufactures or trades. A supplier that calls itself both on a marketplace profile has made a self-declared claim, not a verified one.
2. Are the specifications measurable?
Terms such as industrial grade cannot be tested (Harris Sliwoski, Aug 2026). A pultrusion machine specification should name pull force, clamp force, working window, speed range, number of heating zones and their control accuracy, puller type, PLC and HMI brand, hydraulic or servo components, connected power, and supply voltage and frequency.
Dies need their own specification: steel grade, chrome thickness, polish, length, cavity count and dimensional tolerances against your drawing. If a value matters to you, it belongs in the contract annex with a unit and a tolerance.
3. Is there an independent FAT with pass/fail criteria?
Factory videos are not acceptance (Harris Sliwoski, Aug 2026). A pultrusion machine FAT (factory acceptance test) should run the line with your launch die, your resin system or an agreed equivalent, at agreed speeds, for an agreed duration, against written pass/fail criteria.
- Scope: which machines and dies are tested, and for how long.
- Methods: how speed, pull force, temperature stability and profile dimensions are measured.
- Pass/fail: the numbers that decide acceptance, and what happens on a fail.
- Attendance: your process engineer, or an inspector from SGS, BV or TÜV at your cost.
- Records: data log, video, dimensional report on profile samples.
Western extrusion-line makers treat FAT the same way: Bausano runs it on every line under operating conditions, and Frain recommends that installers, operators and maintainers attend and plan a full day (Bausano; Frain).
4. Are payment terms tied to acceptance?
A common split is 30 percent deposit and 70 percent before shipment. If the 70 percent is not linked to a passed FAT, it can leave you fully paid before any meaningful test (Harris Sliwoski, Aug 2026). That is the payment structure to avoid.
Tie each payment to a milestone you can verify: contract, passed FAT, shipment documents, installation, and final acceptance at your site. Keep the last tranche until the line has run your profile in your plant.
5. Will it pass electrical and safety rules at destination?
Check local electrical, safety, environmental and licensing rules before production starts, and do not rely on a seller's statement that it has shipped to your country before (Harris Sliwoski, Aug 2026).
China's grid supplies 380 V at 50 Hz. North America and Saudi Arabia run 60 Hz, and many US plants take 480 V 60 Hz three-phase power. Motors, pumps, heaters and transformers must be specified for the destination supply, and US inspectors commonly expect a control panel built to UL 508A. In the EU the line must meet the machinery rules; see the EU Machinery Regulation guide.
6. Spares, documentation and software dependence
Plan for spare parts, documentation, proprietary software and remote access, and local repairability (Harris Sliwoski, Aug 2026). On a pultrusion line the wear parts are clamp pads, heater cartridges, thermocouples, seals, belts on caterpillar pullers and saw blades.
Software is the hidden dependency. If the PLC program is locked with a password only the supplier holds, every parameter change or fault diagnosis needs the supplier. Ask for passwords, the program backup and the electrical drawings as contract deliverables.
7. Enforcement and warranty party
Plan enforcement realistically (Harris Sliwoski, Aug 2026). Know which company gives the warranty, which law governs the contract, where disputes are heard, and whether that company has assets or a presence where a judgment or award can be enforced. A warranty from a party you cannot reach is a sentence on paper.
The checklist
| Item | Why it matters | What to get in writing |
|---|---|---|
| Legal entity | Manufacturer and seller may be different companies | Full legal names of manufacturer, exporter of record and contracting party; business licenses |
| Measurable specs | Untestable terms cannot be enforced | Spec annex with units and tolerances for machine, dies and auxiliaries |
| FAT | Defects are cheaper to fix before shipment | FAT protocol: scope, methods, pass/fail criteria, attendance, records |
| Payment terms | Money released early removes leverage | Milestones tied to passed FAT, shipment, installation and final site acceptance |
| Electrical and safety | 380 V 50 Hz equipment on a 480 V 60 Hz supply fails at start-up or inspection | Destination voltage and frequency; panel standard (CE or UL 508A); component certifications |
| Spares | One failed wear part can stop the line for weeks | Spare-parts kit list shipped with the line; recommended stock list; parts lead times |
| Software and PLC | A locked program makes the supplier a permanent gatekeeper | PLC passwords, program backup, electrical and hydraulic drawings, manuals in your language |
| Commissioning and training | Operators trained on a video are not trained | Days on site, number of trainees, die commissioned, sign-off criteria |
| Warranty and enforcement | A warranty is only as good as the party behind it | Warranty party, period, exclusions, response time, governing law, dispute forum |

Questions buyers ask
- Is it safe to buy a pultrusion machine from a trading company?
- It can be, if the contract names the manufacturer, the exporter and the warranty party, and you can audit the factory. The risk is not the trading company itself but not knowing who builds and supports the machine.
- What payment terms should I accept?
- Milestones tied to verifiable events: contract, passed FAT, shipment, installation and final site acceptance. A 30/70 split with 70 percent due before shipment and no link to a passed FAT leaves you fully paid before any meaningful test.
- What should a pultrusion machine FAT include?
- A run with your die and resin system or an agreed equivalent, measured speed, pull force, temperature stability and profile dimensions, written pass/fail criteria, a data log and video. Attend yourself or send SGS, BV or TÜV.
- Can a Chinese pultrusion line run on 480 V 60 Hz?
- Yes, if it is specified for it before production. Motors, pumps, heaters and the control panel must be built for the destination supply. Retrofitting after delivery is expensive; in the adjacent extrusion industry some North American buyers paid US$50,000 to 60,000 per line to rewire (Polyform Next).
- Does marketplace trade assurance protect a machine purchase?
- Only briefly. Alibaba Trade Assurance refund windows run 30 days from delivery, or 60 for Enterprise accounts, while equipment defects can take longer to show (Harris Sliwoski, Aug 2026). Contract terms do more.
